Natural cork-based mats to be used for thermal and impact sound insulation

The construction product is a natural cork-based mat for thermal insulation and impact sound insulation,hereinafter referred to as "natural cork-based mat". The factory-made natural cork-based mats are composed of natural cork granules and a polyurethane prepolymer as binding agent. The natural cork-based mats can contain an admixture of recycled granules of other materials, such as recycled rubber or recycled ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) foam or both. The natural cork-based mats can have a profiled surface and optional layers (e.g., foil, vapour barrier, self-adhesive film). Additives may be used to improve the reaction to fire classification or microbiological behaviour. Natural cork-based mats can be made of cork granules, expanded granulated cork, expanded pure agglomerated cork, regranulated cork, composite agglomerated cork or recovered granulate. Synthetic cork-based mats are outside the scope of this EAD.

The relevant properties for the description of the natural cork-based mat are: length and width, nominal thickness, squareness and mass per unit area.

The product is not fully covered by the following harmonised technical specifications:

·EN 131701:The product deviates from the scope of this standard regarding:

(1) its thickness, which can be less than 20 mm,

(2) its composition, that may contain an admixture of granules of other recycled materials, cork granules other than of expanded cork, and where there is an addition of a prepolymer of polyurethane as a binder and

(3) its intended use.

EN 13170 does not cover the following essential characteristics which are relevant for natural cork-based mats: biological resistance, compressive strength at O.5 mm, deformation for underlays.dynamic load resistance for underlays, mass per unit area and impact sound reduction.

EN 13170 includes some essential characteristics which are not relevant for the natural cork-based mats, due to their intended use as parts of a floor system, or under a floor covering (underlay) or under a floating screed, or comparable build-ups on solid slab (underscreed); the not relevant essential characteristics are: water absorption, air flow resistivity and sound absorption. In addition,the point load characteristic is not applicable to the natural cork-based mats used under a screed and, in case of natural cork-based mats used as underlays, a deformation of 5 mm is not possible to apply considering the usual thicknesses of products used as underlays

The CE marking allows the manufacturer to freely market his product in the entire European Economic Area as well as in Switzerland and Turkey.
